Omega-3 fatty acids provide two key benfeits for the eye. One involves the retina and the other involves macular degeneration.
Here’s how Boston-based physician Dr. Mallika Marshall explains the Omega-3 benefits:
“Try to eat foods that contain Lutein and Omega 3 fish oils. Lutein is a ‘carotenoid’ found in green, leafy vegetables and in egg yolks. It’s an antioxidant that protects not only our eyes by fighting macular degeneration, but our skin. And omega 3 fish oils, which we’ve been hearing so much about lately, are eyes-friendly. It’s a fatty acid that can protect the retina, and help us produce eye fluids. Fatty acids also help protect against macular degeneration and retinitis.”

Macular degeneration has been proven to be a nutritionally responsive eye disease. Below is a recent study showing how supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids help significantly reduce the chances of getting macular degeneration as follows:
Last month Archives of Ophthalmology published a meta analysis on omega-3 fatty acid and fish intake and its effect on the prevention of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
This study identified 274 abstracts, 3 prospective cohort, 3 case-control, and 3 cross-sectional studies.
Using quantitative methods, a high dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids was associated with a 38% reduction in the risk of late AMD. Fish intake (2x per week) was associated with reduced risk of early and late AMD.
More omega-3 and AMD specific studies need to be conducted to further investigate omega-3¹s effect on AMD.
