The Meat Question: Omega-3 and Grass-Fed Beef

by admin on April 24, 2008

If you are buying grass fed-beef in search of higher Omega-3 levels, keep in mind that all grass-fed beef is not created equal.

Yes… there are typically higher levels of Omega-3 fats in grass-fed beef. And there are environmental benefits as well.

In the fall of 2007, the U.S. Department of Agriculture unveiled standards to help consumers make sure they’re actually getting meat from animals fed nothing but grass.

But the standards are watered down and not terribly helpful. What the regulators allow beef producers to label as “grass-fed” can actually include beef that has been fed antiobiotics and hormones.

“The public perception is that grass-fed animals are on pasture, that they are not confined and are not given hormones or antibiotics.” says Dr. Patricia Whisnant, a veterinarian and president of the American Grassfed Association.
